Notes
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanity, University of Saint Joseph, 2024As a special kind of interpersonal relationship, teacher-student relationship has unique philosophical significance and research value. In Macao, a place where Chinese philosophy and traditional culture are profoundly influenced, teacher-student relationship is also featured by Chinese Confucian culture. However, with the development of modern society and technology, people are paying more attention to their self-worth. Consequently, the public’s views and requirements on education have also changed, and the conflicts between teachers and students have gradually emerged as a result. According to the characteristics of Macao society and culture, I would like to analyze and interpret the philosophical ideas and concepts of Wuwei (無為) “non-action”, Rouruo (柔弱) “Being ‘soft’ and ‘weak’” in Daoism, another philosophical trend which constitutes the traditional culture of China, in an attempt to explain and suggest the application of the major conflicts between teachers and students in Macao at the present time. From the qualitative research-based questionnaire surveys that have been conducted, it can be seen that different expectations, ineffective communication and misunderstanding between teachers and students, the lack of respect and trust between teachers and students, as well as the imbalance of educational rights and responsibilities in the teacher-student relationship, are the most significant causes of problems in teacher-student relationship in Macao.
It is the intention of mine that through the application of Daoist philosophical ideas and mindsets, such as “Wuwei”, to the problems that arise in the interaction between teachers and students, both teachers and students will be able to find philosophical ways of thinking that can solve the problems, improve the present situation, and are suitable for them Supervisor : Thomas Cai
