Supervisor : Mak Chi KuanThe purposes of the study are to explore the current situation of life education in Macau from the perspectives of Macau teachers and parents in the following four life education related dimensions, including (1) the awareness of the promotion of life education in schools, (2) the awareness of the importance of life education, (3) the difficulties and challenges faced (by teachers and parents) when promoting and executing life education, (4) the solutions/coping strategies in dealing with such difficulties and challenges; and their correlates with teachers’ sense of efficacy as well as child prosocial behaviors.
This study adopted a mixed methods research approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, respectively. The participants of the survey study were 315 primary and kindergarten teachers as well as 319 parents of children in primary schools and kindergartens in Macau, and five participants who have relevant life education experience took part in the semi-structured interviews.
Major research findings are as follows:
1. Macau teachers and parents scored at the upper-middle level in all four dimensions of life education related dimensions. The scores for the awareness of the importance of life education were the highest while the scores for the awareness of the promotion of life education in schools were the lowest.
2. Teachers’ sense of efficacy could significantly predict teachers’ the awareness of the importance of life education, and the solutions/coping strategies in dealing with such difficulties and challenges, but not the difficulties and challenges faced by teachers when promoting and executing life education.
3. Child prosocial behaviors were significantly related to parents' awareness of the importance of life education, and the solutions/coping strategies in dealing with such difficulties and challenges, but not the difficulties and challenges faced by parents when promoting and executing life education.
4. Teachers and parents in Macau saw the importance of life education, but the active organization of and participation in life education have been lacking.
5. The instability of the moral and civic education teacher team, heavy workload of teachers and students, lack of awareness of life education by teachers and parents, insufficient allocation of resources to life education by schools were the major difficulties and challenges faced when promoting and executing life education in Macau.
6. Changing the teaching modes and methodologies, using more practical activities for students to experience life, developing supporting teaching materials, and enhancing community connections can all effectively promote the development of life education in Macau.
Applications and implications will be discussed and suggestions proposed based on the findings of this research study 本研究主要探討澳門推行生命教育之現況,並探討背後影響之因素,包括學校推動生命教育現況、對生命教育的認知、推動生命教育時所面對的困難及面對生命教育困難時的應對方法。本研究採用混合研究方法,透過問卷調查及訪談收集量化及質性數據,以於澳門任教小學、幼稚園之教師,小孩就讀澳門小學、幼稚園之家長為研究對象,以「推動生命教育」量表、教師自我效能量表及小孩親社會行為量表作為量化研究工具進行調查,並輔以質性訪談形式,向五位與生命教育相關之人士進行半結構式訪談。研究者以紙本及網上填答形式發放問卷,共回收有效的教師問卷315份及家長問卷319份。研究結果歸納如下︰ 一、澳門教師及家長皆在生命教育各層面呈中上水平,其中對生教育的認知得分最高,瞭解學校推動生命教育現況得分最低。 二、澳門教師的自我效能與學校推動生命教育現況、教師對生命教育的認知、面對生命教育困難時的應對方法有顯著正相關,推動生命教育時所面對的困難則未達顯著相關。 三、小孩親社會行為與家長對學校推動生命教育現況、生命教育的認知、面對生命教育困難時的應對方法有顯著正相關,對推動生命教育時所面對的困難則未達顯著相關。 四、澳門教師及家長重視生命教育,惟生命教育的舉辦及參與未見積極。 五、品公教師團隊不穩、教師工作量大、學生學業繁重、教師及家長對生命教育的認知不足、學校分配較少資源在生命教育上等,是澳門推動生命教育所面對的主要困難。 六、改變教學模式、多用實踐活動感受生命、研發配套教材及增加社區建設,都能有效促進澳門生命教育的發展。 最後,研究者根據本研究之發現進行討論並提出建議。In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Education in the School of Education University of Saint Joseph, Macau, June, 2023
